FASHION DOCUMENTARIES YOU MUST WATCH


We are in a lucky position as inhabitants of the 21st century that we don't have to isolate our knowledge to what is available on the shelves of a library. We have access to endless resources online to learn about what makes us tick. With that being said, here's a list of fashion documentaries you must watch that are available either for free or a small cost on various streaming services online. Let me know if you check any of them out!


THE TRUE COST


This documentary focuses on the gritty underbelly of the fashion industry and the damage that the production of fashion does physically, mentally, and environmentally. It certainly is not the glamorous idea of fashion that everyone enjoys but it is required viewing for anyone who wants to enter the industry and make positive change. Knowledge is power.


THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE


This documentary focuses on the 'Fashion Bible', Vogue, and their fall fashion issue - The September Issue. The standout star of this documentary was Grace Coddington, former Creative Director of Vogue, who is from the same Welsh island as me. This documentary was a great look at all the pieces of the puzzle that come together to make the largest and most famous issue of Vogue.


MADEMOISELLE C


This documentary follows the transition of Carine Roitfeld after she stepped down as Editor-in-Chief of French Vogue to begin her own magazine and media brand. It is an interesting look at the French luxury industry but also the difficulty in beginning a media brand, even with an extensive network and prestigious resume.


IN VOGUE: THE EDITOR'S EYE


This documentary take you behind the scenes of Vogue magazine's editorial spreads coordinated by some of the most talented editors in the fashion business. It is an intricate look at what goes into developing some of the most beautiful and controversial editorial spreads.


ALEXA CHUNG: THE FUTURE OF FASHION


Available on YouTube, this series dives into the various careers available in fashion, spanning from Paris and London to New York. It's great insight for any indiviudal seeking to learn from the greats of each area of the industry on what to expect and how to get a start. Alexa interviews Leandra Medine of Man Repeller fame, Paul Smith, and many other industry insiders.


THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY


An inside look at the creation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual MET Gala, held on the first Monday in May. Unfortunately, this year's gala was canceled due to COVID-19 but you can relive the glitz and glamour of the occasion with this fantastic documentary!


THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRE


Larger-than-life editor, Andre Leon Talley, formerly of Vogue, takes us through his life story in this documentary. We get to learn about his early life and battles with racism to make his way up the ranks of fashion to becoming one of the most recognizable names and faces in the industry. His autobiography is also fantastic!
